BMW Lambda Sensor
The Lambda (Oxygen) Sensor is a sensor that measures the amount of oxygen between gas and liquid. Oxygen sensor, which controls the air and fuel mixture, creates pressure critique together with oxygen measurement. There are two oxygen sensors in the vehicle. One of them is located between the exhaust manifold and the catalyst, and the other is located at the catalyst outlet.
Lambda (Oxygen) Sensor:
The Lambda (Oxygen) sensor measures the amount of oxygen between gas and liquid. Controlling the air-fuel mixture, the lambda sensor also creates pressure feedback along with oxygen measurement. There are two oxygen sensors in a vehicle. One is located between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter, and the other is at the catalytic converter outlet.
The lambda sensor measures the oxygen content in the exhaust gases and transmits this information to the engine control unit (ECU). The primary function of the lambda sensor is to ensure the correct ratio of the air-fuel mixture to optimize the engine's combustion process. The functions of the lambda sensor are as follows:
Adjusting the Air-Fuel Mixture: The lambda sensor measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases. This information is transmitted to the engine control unit to help determine if the air-fuel mixture is rich (too much fuel) or lean (too little fuel). The engine control unit uses this information to adjust the amount of fuel injected and the timing of injection, ensuring the ideal air-fuel mixture.
Emission Control: The lambda sensor monitors the combustion efficiency of the engine and ensures the correct air-fuel mixture ratio. The correct air-fuel mixture reduces exhaust emissions and minimizes environmental impact. The lambda sensor helps keep the engine's emission values within acceptable levels and reduces the release of harmful gases into the environment.
Monitoring Catalytic Converter Efficiency: By measuring the oxygen content in the exhaust gases, the lambda sensor controls the efficiency of the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter transforms harmful components in the exhaust gases (e.g., carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides) into less harmful substances. The lambda sensor ensures the correct air-fuel mixture, enhancing the catalytic converter's effectiveness.
Optimizing Engine Performance and Fuel Economy: The lambda sensor optimizes engine performance and fuel economy by ensuring the correct air-fuel mixture. Efficient combustion means more power generation and less fuel consumption. The lambda sensor helps maintain this balance, improving engine performance and increasing fuel efficiency.
